Golden Ilok country

The slopes of the Srijem vineyards sloping down to the Danube form the most beautiful scenery, which, in combination with the rich Etno-gastronomic offer, invite you to rest and relax.

This beautiful vineyard is located in the easternmost part of Vukovar-Srijem County and Croatia, on the southern and southwestern slopes of Fruška Gora with its center in Ilok, therefore it is often called Ilok vineyards.

Thanks to the large number of sunny hours, the hills height from 200 to 250 meters and drained soils on a flag substrate that do not retain moisture, the vine gives birth to high quality grapes, as a basic requirement for the production of premium wines that go from Ilok to Croatia, Europe and the world. From the first vine, planted by the Romans in this area back in the 3rd century, the Srijem vineyards have steadily expanded and today cover an area of about 1,500 hectares. Although the most common variety is Grashevina, which gives wines with lighter body and alcohol, but fresh in taste with pleasant acids and fresh fruity scents – the Traminac celebrated this area far away. In these climatic conditions and in these locations, Traminac brings its maximum and is a leader in quality in Croatia, but also outside. With these two the most important white varieties grown in the Srijem vineyards are Chardonnay, Rhine Riesling, Pinot White, Pinot Gray, Silvanac Green… Although the black varieties are represented to a lesser extent, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and the most important Frankovka are grown, which

has its origins directly in the territory of Srijem, Slavonia and Lower Austria.

In recent years, more and more rosé wines are produced, which are the result of the by early separation of the skin of the grape bean from the fermentation process and whose base is usually Frankovka and Cabernet Sauvignon. These are dry wines that are characterized by a pleasant fruity freshness in aroma and taste and are an ideal summer refreshment when chilled accordingly. 18 wine growers with wine cellars and landscaped tasting rooms are the content of the Ilok Wine Route, which runs through the streets of Iloka and ends in the picturesque vineyards of the Vukovo and Principovac viewpoints.

The offer of Srijem vineyards is complemented by the wines of 5 winemakers from the neighboring Vukovar region. The uninterrupted tradition of incredible 1,800 years of wine production in Ilok dates back to the value and ancient Rome. Roman Emperor Probus from third century introduces new quality varieties to this area, and even the Turks, despite the religious ban on alcohol consumption, traded Ilok wine. The nobles from the Odescalchi family in the 17th century  offered first bottled wines from their cellars in Europe, known from 19th century at the English court. How much the British appreciate the wine of this area, also says the fact that Ilok Traminac was drunk about sixty years ago at the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II .
